Concrete
Whether you are building a driveway, setting fence posts, or placing a foundation for a large building, you should know that there are many different types, strengths, and compositions of concrete, each with characteristics that make them perform better for different applications.
Decking
The first thing to know about choosing decking material is that all decks use treated lumber for the framing, which is the structural part of the deck that you don’t usually see unless you’re underneath it. So the decision process usually involves only the materials that will make up the decking surface and railings.
Doors
Most entry doors perform well overall. But the materials they’re made of–fiberglass, steel, and wood–each have strengths and weaknesses.
Insulation
A basic law of physics is that warm air gravitates toward cooler temperatures. This means that as your heating system works to warm the interior of your home during the winter, the heated air is constantly seeking to move to unconditioned cooler areas such as the attic, garage, basement, or beyond the exterior walls. The barrier for this heat transfer is insulation.
Lumber
Selecting the right type and grade of lumber for your job depends on familiarity with various wood properties and defects. There are two general categories of lumber: hardwoods and softwoods.
Paint
Most paints fall into one of the general categories of eggshell, semi-gloss, flat or gloss. You may also need to apply primer or first coat, depending on the surface being painted. These basic paints will answer most of your needs but it is worth looking for formulas that will perform better in specific situations. Always apply paint as recommended by the manufacturer.
Plywood
Oriented strand board (OSB) and plywood are wood structural panels made by compressing and gluing pieces of wood together. While OSB and plywood appear similar and are generally interchangeable, the different ways that each material is manufactured contribute to each having its own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Power Tools
Power Tools have become a must have on any jobsite whether you’re a contractor or do it yourselfer. From cordless drills, circular saws, impact drivers, table saws, planers, sanders, grinders, to crosscut saws, your choice of brands and styles are infinite.
Railings
Railings will really set off your new or pre-existing deck. You can either design and hand built custom railing made from wood, or you can choose a manufactured railing.
Roofing
From natural materials like slate and wood to man made products such as asphalt, sheet metal, and plastic polymers; there are more types and styles of roofing to choose from today than ever before.
Trusses
Trusses are used in a variety of applications where a lightweight, yet strong, structure is required. Many home builders order prefabricated roof trusses from a manufacturer and have them delivered to a building site because building roof trusses is labor intensive and prefabricated roof trusses save time, materials, and money.
Windows
Most styles of windows are available in a number of different materials. Each material has advantages and disadvantages in terms of maintenance and appearance.
